Stephanie Tanny is a perfect example of why we love our WHP alumnae. As a 25-year-old living in Denver, Colorado, Stephanie Tanny is far from your ordinary young woman. While most women her age after college are jump-starting their careers in the fickle economy, Stephanie is willfully moving forward with her goals of being a catalyst and voice for change in the representation of women.

With the help of The White House Project, Stephanie is encouraged to run for office one day “if the right fit comes along.” She has already been a Running Start Star for Congresswoman Judy Chu in Washington D.C., acted as an agent of change for legislation at her alma mater Colorado State University which now allocates $180,000 yearly towards prevention education and support, and attended TWHP’s Go Run. She knows firsthand that it can be really tough to get women involved in politics due to continued assumptions of gender norms and misogyny that are still very prevalent and real.

However, each woman in office is making a huge difference,” says Stephanie, “Just by being there and making sure that issues that disproportionately affect women are recognized.”

Give this girl a microphone and she will proudly be an educated, loud voice for underrepresented women.  Aside from being televised on C-SPAN as a National Keynote Contest Winner to speak about sexual assault, she is also currently a successful spoken word artist reaching out to audiences who are captivated by her fierce attitude and witty enigma.

As you can tell, Stephanie does not limit herself and is always seeking new mediums to be proactive. She would tell anyone looking to promote or organize as women to “just go for it! Seek out mentors and ask for advice. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you from what you really want to do in life.”

She believes that connecting people with similar experiences will only energize you because our work is all interconnected. Sticking together is important because we understand our own needs the best. “Remember, our voices are valid, powerful, and needed.”

Stephanie currently resides in Denver, Colorado and is thrilled to continue her journey as an activist and artist in her home city. Check out her website to keep up with her!
