As an Education major at Texas Southern University, Shayla Owens is a young leader working to improve public education. Shayla has spent her short college career advocating for social equity in public schools, specifically in Texas.

“In Dallas and Houston we see a great need for change because the school districts are in disarray,” says Owens, “Texas has more students in public schools than ever before, and has continued to see drop-outs and unprepared students graduate. These changes mean we need more innovative solutions on how to educate, retain and prepare students so that they have the skills to go on and lead in the community.”

Owens is determined to be part of those solutions. She hopes that investing in her own leadership will help serve her ultimate goal of education reform — which is why she plans to attend Go Run on February 17th - 19th in Dallas.

“We need more programs like Go Run to help develop young women leaders, and help women lift each other up,” says Owens. “It will be a great opportunity for personal growth and learning from other established women.”

Not only is Owens an advocate for education reform, but she believes that women play a vital role in effecting positive change in the community. At Go Run, Owens hopes to meet and learn from women leaders with similar interests in public service:
“Women are naturally passionate, so as leaders, we bring that emotion and passion to our work.”

Bring your passion and join us and other leaders like Shayla, at Go Run in Dallas, February 17th-19th. Fill out an application today or contact csanders@thewhitehouseproject.org for more information
