As a Youth Services Coordinator for the Central MN Sexual Assault Center, and a Founding member of St. Cloud’s Today’s Women, Decontee Sawyer has been a prominent leader and an inspiration for women across Minnesota.
Sawyer first attended Go Run with fellow founding members of Today’s Women, which was launched in 2002 at St. Cloud State University. The organization runs a mentoring program that provides a safe environment where women can express themselves, build healthy relationships, and get involved in their community.
“It’s so rewarding to help someone realize their full potential,” says Sawyer. “That’s why getting involved with The White House Project was so important. We shared the same mission of wanting to see women change the world.”
Since Go Run, Sawyer has attended several other TWHP trainings, and continues to encourage others to attend as well.
“The energy in the room is always so inspiring. Everyone is looking to make a difference in their community, and at the same time, encouraging one another, “says Sawyer. “One of the most important things we try to stress at Today’s Women is that women can work together and empower one another, not hold each other back. The White House Project is such a wonderful example of that truth.”
Sawyer is committed to helping to develop a community full of confident and assertive women who are willing to share their voices. “The presence of one female role model in a community goes such a long way. If I can show just one girl how strong and powerful her voice is, I’ve done my job.” But Sawyer has already helped hundreds. There’s no doubt that she will continue to support and encourage many more.
